What is this subject about?
Drawing from the health, behavioural, social and physical sciences, the Health syllabus offers students an action, advocacy and evaluation-oriented curriculum. Embedded in Health is the Health inquiry model that provides the conceptual framework for this syllabus. The students will undertake units focusing on personal resilience, alcohol, road safety and respectful relationships in the post-schooling transition.

This subject is best suited to students who have achieved well in English, as all assessments are written. Students who are creative and can think analytically are also suited to this subject.
What are some common career pathways that are associated with this subject?
The health industry is currently experiencing strong growth and is recognised as the largest industry for new employment in Australia, with continued expansion predicted due to ageing population trends. Health is a General subject suited to students who are interested in pathways beyond school that lead to tertiary studies, vocational education or work. A course of study in Health can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of health science, public health, health education, allied health, nursing and medical professions.
What assumed knowledge or subject results is recommended from Year 10 to be successful in this subject?
Students who have achieved well in English are best suited to this subject.

Are there any excursions or extra costs for this subject?
Students are expected to attend a 3 day Adventure Therapy Camp in year 11 as part of the Personal Resiliency Unit and a 1 day excursion as part of the Road Safety Unit.

What is this subject about?
Senior Physical Education is a General Subject. It is an academically rigorous, scientifically based subject that enables students to explore and enhance their own and others’ health and physical activity across 4 units. Students regularly learn and enhance their understanding of theoretical concepts through regular engagement in movement and physical activity.
What units are completed in this subject?

Unit 1: students optimise volleyball performance using concepts of motor learning, anatomy & biomechanics

Unit 2: students determine psychological factors, barriers and enablers that influence performance and engagement in physical activity in a variety of sports.

Physical Education is suited to students who are interested in further education and employment in the fields of exercise science, biomechanics, the allied health professions, psychology, teaching, sports journalism and coaching.
What should I be good at to excel at this subject?
Good writing skills and the successful completion of year 10 Physical Education Extension will be a significant advantage for students enrolling in Senior PE. Students who have an equal interest in the practical and theory aspects of PE, in particular applying the theoretical concepts related to improving performance and participation in sport and physical activity, will excel at this subject.
How will I be assessed?
80% of assessment pieces are focussed on written investigations, exams and multimodal folios, with physical performance comprising only 20% of students’ grades. Students will have an opportunity in Year 11 to practice all modes of assessment from the summative year 12 work.
Is this a mostly practical subject?
In Senior Physical Education, there is a significant increase in the amount of learning and assessment work completed in the classroom. Two assessment tasks in Year 11 and two in Year 12 do not include a practical mark, therefore more time is spent in the classroom learning about those concepts and completing the assessment. During these units, practical lessons are utilised to help students learn about the concepts through their engagement in various practical activities, rather than learning the rules or skills of a particular sport. For volleyball, athletics, badminton and touch football, a small practical mark is assigned and students are more likely to engage in more regular practical lessons during this unit of work.

What is this subject about?
Sport and Recreation provides students with opportunities to learn in, through and about physical activities. This is done through active engagement in individual, group and team based activities – leading to the development of vocational, life and physical skills.
Who is this subject best suited to?
This subject is best suited to students who enjoy learning through physical activity. Students will be required to take on a number of roles; as coaches and participants, in varying sizes of groups or as individuals. Therefore, students who are able to work effectively in a variety of styles should excel.
What are some common career pathways that are associated with this subject?
Some common career pathways from Sport and Recreation include:

What assumed knowledge or subject results is recommended from Year 10 to be successful in this subject?
A successful completion of year 10 HPE and to a lesser extent, PHE, will be an advantage as it will give you some of the skills and knowledge needed for sport and recreation.
What should I be good at to excel at this subject?
When completing assessment items, students will be required to acquire, apply and evaluate what they have learnt throughout each unit to the topic that has been covered. Therefore, good writing skills are important in order to do this proficiently and comprehensively.
Are there any compatible subjects that would be beneficial to also study with this subject?
It would also be beneficial to study Physical Education as some concepts that are taught throughout the units are similar. Physical Education as uses practical based lessons in order to teach theoretical content.
How will I be assessed?
Students will be assessed using a variety of modes, these include: projects, investigations, extended responses, performances and examinations.
Are there any excursions or any costs for this subject?
There are no excursions in Sport and Recreation so therefore, there will be no extra costs attached to the subject.

Careers in the Health, Fitness, Coaching, Sports and Recreation Industry are all possible pathways for students. These include, but not limited to; Sports Trainer, Sporting official, Football Professional Player, Sports Coach, Sports Marketing Officer and Club Official, to name a few.
What assumed knowledge or subject results is recommended from Year 10 to be successful in this subject?
Students need to have an understanding of and an interest in the game of Football. They need to have a basic skill level in football or the potential to quickly acquire a basic skill level. There are no specials subject requirements from year 10 to be successful in this subject.
What should I be good at to excel at this subject?
Students should be able to use technology to film and edit their performances and place the material into presentations for assessment. They should be able to design practical activities and demonstrate a high level of skills in simple and complex performance environments.
What will help me to be successful in this course?
Completing the course work in a timely manner by being engaged in the learning process at school and practicing Football skills whenever possible.
Are there any compatible subjects that would be beneficial to also study with this subject?
Both Physical Education and Certificate IV in fitness are compatible subjects.
How will I be assessed?
Students will do eight modules over two years. Each module will be assessed using one of three modes; Performance, Investigation or a Project. Each module is equally weighted and the subject can contribute to a students ATAR.
Are there any excursions or extra costs for this subject?
There are incursions for this subject conducted by the University of Queensland at Kenmore SHS on Human Performance metrics. Students will need to purchase and bring to school, long football socks to wear over shin pads. It is recommended that students have their own shin pads and appropriate footwear to bring to school for practical lessons.
