Assistance for International Students

Please refer to the KSHS International Student Handbook (PDF, 4MB) for important information about Kenmore State High School's policies and procedures.

English language support at school

EQI-enrolled EAL/D (English as an additional language or dialect) students study core English three times a week. In the junior school, international students will also receive an extra 70 minutes per week of English language support. These extra classes are small and allow for more individualised support and feedback to students across all subject areas.

In the senior school, Education Queensland International (EQI) students are enrolled in smaller sized core English classes (three times per week) to allow them more one-on-one time with teachers.

After-school tutoring

Kenmore State High School international student program also funds a tutoring service. Three times a week after school, EQI students are able to access a number of tutors to assist them with homework and assessment.

Support staff

Ms Martina Barham is the International Student Coordinator and EAL/D Teaching Assistant. Ms Barham assists students with academic and school-based support, liaising with classroom teachers, EAL/D teachers, and students, to enable successful outcomes for our international students. The EAL/D Teaching Assistant works to support our international students in all of their classes. Other members of the EAL/D teaching team include Ms Nicole Poder, Mr Cameron Royle, and Ms Michelle Wilson.

Ms Kim Lawrence is the Homestay Coordinator. Ms Lawrence can assist students with any homestay enquiries/issues, and provides regular support to international students.

Extra-curricular opportunities

Our international students have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of school and extra-curricular activities, including subject-based excursions and incursions, school musicals and plays, music ensemble performances, Gala day sporting activities, university level science and mathematics courses to name but a few. We encourage our international students to fully embrace our school community and participate in as many activities as they feel comfortable doing.

International student kitchen and lounge

Our international students have access to their own air-conditioned kitchen and lounge room facility. The large wall mural representing the Four Seasons, was designed and painted by three of our international students; Chloe, May and Ella.
