What is Accounting about?  
Accounting is a universal discipline, encompassing the successful management of financial resources of the public sector, businesses and individuals. It is foundational to all organisations across all industries, and assists in discharging accountability and financial control. Accounting is a way of systematically organising, critically analysing and communicating financial data and information for decision-making. 

Who is Accounting best suited to? 
Accounting is best suited to students with a special interest in business, commerce, entrepreneurship and the personal management of financial resources. The numerical, literacy, technical, financial, critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills learned in Accounting enrich the personal and working lives of students. 

What are some common career pathways that are associated with Accounting? 
Accounting leads to pathways beyond school that lead to tertiary studies, vocational education or work. A course of study in Accounting can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of accounting, business, management, banking, finance, law, economics and commerce.  

Does Accounting count towards ATAR? 
Yes 

Do I have to do Year 10 Accounting to choose the subject in Year 11?  
No, a student can start Accounting in Year 11 without having studied Year 10 Accounting. 

Do I have to be successful in Maths and English to choose this subject? 
There are no pre-requisites in Accounting, however a C for English in Year 10 is desirable and it is also highly recommended that you are strong at Maths. 

Is there a lot of writing in Accounting? 
Accounting does have assessment objectives relating to writing but no more than any other Year 11 subject and less than some subjects. 

What will help me to be successful in this course?  
Success with Accounting depends upon the individual student. Completion of homework exercises allows you to gauge your understanding of the work together with your willingness to engage in discussion in class. There will be problems to solve and perseverance will certainly enhance your success. 

How will I be assessed? 
Assessment takes the form of three formative assessment items and four summative assessment items. The three formative items consist of two combination response 2-hour exams and one project. The summative assessment consists of two combination response 2-hour exams, one project and an external exam. The external exam counts 25% to the final ATAR result.  Students will be expected to use computers during most of the assessment with some hand-written responses. 

Are there any excursions or any costs for Accounting?  
There are no excursions in Accounting and no extra cost involved.

What is this subject about?  
Business investigates the lifecycle of a business from seed/start up to post maturity and the various strategies used by businesses to manage marketing, finance, human resources and operational activities. 

Who is this subject best suited to? 
Students who are interested in the business world and management strategies. 

What are some common career pathways that are associated with this subject? 
Business can be paired with every interest so that students have the knowledge to run their own business in the future. Additionally, Business and Commerce are popular university pathways with Business featuring in double degrees. 

What assumed knowledge or subject results is recommended from Year 10 to be successful in this subject?  
It is preferred that students study Business in year 10 in preparation for year 11 Business. At least a C in English is recommended as the subject has a high literacy requirement. 

What should I be good at to excel at this subject?  
Students who are good at researching, interpreting and analysing data and sources and good writing skills will excel in this subject. 

Are there any compatible subjects that would be beneficial to also study with this subject? 
Students might like to pair this subject with Certificate III in Business for a well-rounded study of the world of business. 

How will I be assessed? 
Students will complete exams that have short and extended response items including analysis of stimulus. Students will also be required to complete assignments which includes gathering primary data, researching and recommending a course of action. 

Are there any excursions or extra costs for this subject?  
Students will participate in excursions to Maleny Dairies and retail stores as part of IA1 and IA2 assessment in year 12.

Certificate III in Business (VET) FAQs

What is this subject about?  
The qualification is designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the workplace in a variety of industries in an administration role. The units of competency include use social media tolls for collaboration and engagement, organise personal work priorities and development, undertake e-learning, contribute to team effectiveness, be money smart and design and produce business documents. 

Who is this subject best suited to? 
Students who are interested in developing knowledge and skills to enter the workforce but also applying these skills in various business ventures throughout the two year program. 

What are some common career pathways that are associated with this subject? 
Business can be paired with every interest so that students have the knowledge to run their own business in the future. Some universities will accept students into courses based on this qualification. 

What assumed knowledge or subject results is recommended from Year 10 to be successful in this subject?  
It is beneficial if students have completed Certificate I in Business to have an understanding of a VET qualification. However, students should have good reading, writing and computer skills. 

What should I be good at to excel at this subject?  
Students need to have a good work ethic and be able to work independently and in groups. Students must be prepared to work in teams to run business ventures. 

Are there any compatible subjects that would be beneficial to also study with this subject? 
Students might like to pair this subject with Business for a well-rounded study of the world of business. 

How will I be assessed? 
VET qualifications are competency based. This means that students are allowed more than one attempt to demonstrate competency. This could be for written work or demonstration of practical skills. 

Are there any excursions or extra costs for this subject?  
The course is run through Binnacle training and costs approximately $250.
